Overview of the Psychometric Assessment and Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32)

The Psychometric Assessment and Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32) is a human resources appraisal tool that measures aspects of employees or potential employees psychological composition, and capacity. The 32 at the end of the acronym represents the number of personality traits the test measures and the test is offered in 'normative' and 'ipsative' versions. That is to say, the answers can be based on the test takers juxtaposition with social norms or standards, or the individual preferences of the test taker.

History

The original OPQ was designed in 1984, but was replaced by the OPQ32 and the OPQ32r in 2000 and September 2009. The latter of these two versions is available in 31 languages. Two other versions of the test exist and they are called the OPQ32i and the OPQ32n. The creators of the 1984 OPQ  are P. Saville, R. Holdsworth, G. Nyfield, L.Cramp and W.Mabey according to the U.K.'s British Psychological Society's Psychological Testing Centre (PTC). The Occupational Personality Questionnaire is marketed and endorsed by SHL Global, a behavioral and ability assessment firm.
Application

The Psychometric Assessment and Occupational Personality Questionnaire measures 32 aspects of personality according to the aforementioned psychological testing center that also states component parts of the personality test are divided into three main sections labeled 1. relationships with people, 2. thinking style, and 3. feelings and emotions. Each of these main areas of personality are further divided into more specific personality factors. For example, for the thinking style section, adaptability, foresight, and attention to detail are measured.

Effectiveness

Many corporations and organizations worldwide make use of the OPQ32 test because it measures key workplace characteristics and tendencies via personality profiling. For example, in the following career consulting organization's sample OPQ32 test results, managerial, professional, entrepreneurial and personal qualities are all measured with relatives degrees of strength.  The test then explains 16 sub category results in more detail and in terms of the main categories.

Disadvantages

According to Niche Consulting, a New Zealand based  organizational psychology consulting firm, the OPQ32 is not entirely accurate. Moreover, Niche Consulting psychologists claim the test can be 'faked' due to test takers ability to out think the test and answer questions in accordance with the intent of the test. Since the OPQ32 is what they call 'face valid' i.e. what it measures is easily discernible, Niche Consulting psychologists believe the test is easy to dupe.  Many tests are designed to double question personality traits in order to better identify fake answers with statistical invalid answers i.e. non-correlational.
