How to Decorate a Bedroom on a Budget

Decorating a bedroom on a budget is simpler than one might expect. It's amazing what a little paint, some cleaning, and well selected decorations can do to the appearance of a room. The bedroom is the part of the home one should feel relaxed, safe and comfortable.

A well decorated bedroom can bring peace of mind, reflective moments and happy feelings. When decorating it may be a good idea to keep these things in mind in addition to thinking about ways to make the decorating inexpensive and affordable. This article will provide a sequence of steps and techniques that may be helpful when decorating a bedroom on a budget.

Step 1: Creating the bedroom's appearance

Visualize the room: Visualizing the room can help in find the right decorations, and provides a map of what you want to do with the bedroom. To visualize the bedroom, imagine what you want it to look like then see it with your eyes closed or open. Then focus on the details of your visualization; for example, what needs to be placed where, what decoration will compliment a piece of furniture, which colors work best etc.

Choose your style: There are a number of styles to choose from and one can browse magazines, online websites, and library references to get a better idea of which style one likes best and feels most comfortable with. Depending on what style one wants the room to look like will determine where to look for bargains and how one should go about searching for furnishing, dcor, window coverings etc. A few possible styles include but are not limited to the following suggestions:

• Japanese
• Colonial
• Pragmatic
• Luxury
• Standard
• Unique

Step 2: Decorating the bedroom

• Look for deals

Decorations don't have to be expensive. There are always shops, retailers and bargain markets looking to sell items. Discounts are common and deals can be found at local estate sales, moving out sales, and other independent dealers all over town. One may also browse and/or place request ads in the classified section of papers and online market places. Other places to look for deals are goodwill shops and disabled American veteran second hand stores.

• Create decorations by hand

It may sound impossible but many bedroom decorations including furniture can be created by hand. Martha Stewart has some great ideas on home decorations that can be made from inexpensive fabrics. One doesn't have to get the ideas from Martha Stewart, there are many design books that can be obtained from local libraries for free with plenty of ideas on how to make curtains, art work and rugs using material obtained from clearance items at fabric shops.

• Ask for decorations as gifts

Everybody has a birthday, and religious holidays, and wedding anniversaries are an annual event. If one doesn't want gifts that won't be used it may help to ask for something that is actually wanted such as bedroom decorations. Essentially, such decorations are free and one
doesn't have to feel guilty asking for them because it is a special occasion.

• Consider student art

Deals on decor can be found in many places. Student artists are often eager to sell their work to build their art portfolios and their art might be just what your looking for. Student art may be found at local art festivals or through the high-school or college in which they are enrolled in. More entrepreneurial artists might put ads in newspapers or online listings.

Lastly, one may simply choose not to worry about style at all. If one has a bed to sleep on and somewhere to put the clothes that may be all that is needed and may also be the most cost effective method to go by. However, if decoration is important, the above tips can prove both useful and helpful in creating ambiance, and mood in a room that is traditionally meant for retirement, relaxation and comfort.
