How to Decorate a Living Room on a Budget

If you already have a living room you are happy with, there may be little that needs to be done in the decorating department. However, should the inclination to enhance, improve and re-design the living room bestow itself upon you, there are ways to do just that on a limited budget.

Combine family and living rooms together

Living rooms and family rooms sometimes take on the same role creating a mixture of casual family life and a more formal room for entertaining, socializing and relaxing. To successfully combine these two rooms together into a balanced medley of casual formality may involve some creative attention, but in doing so one is essentially getting two rooms for the price of one.

Aestheticize via resourceful frugalness

Since everyone's taste is different and different households have different uses of the living room, aestheticizing with resourceful frugalness is somewhat subjective. Fundamentally, this means to decorate the living room with resourcefulness such as stuffing pillows into tasteful pillow cases, finding the right coffee table book, and wall picture to bring the room together. Whatever accents and items one uses to beautify a living room, there's a good chance they can be found in storage, or from a native American reserve for half the price.

Positioning of decorations and feng shui

If one is using Feng Shui to increase the flow of energy in the living room, the positioning of objects and furniture is quite important. Even if one is not aiming for the goal of feng shui, moving paintings a few inches or to another position on a different wall can make the whole room appear redone and sometimes for the better.

Touch ups that improve appearance affordably

Sometimes a few touchups may be all a room needs. Examples of inexpensive touch ups include wall trim along the carpet line and the wall. Strips of wall trim can cost a reasonable price and be installed fairly easily while gently bringing the floor and the wall together visually. Other touch ups include cleaning and painting over any smudges or dirt marks, steam cleaning the carpet oneself instead of professionally, and going over any small nail holes with joint compound and painting over the joint compound after it dries. Still other affordable touch ups can include changing the socket and light fixtures for one's that match better. If one is really motivated a whole living room can be repainted for the cost of can of paint, a paint brush and some plastic floor protector.

Living art and illumination

Living art can make a room seem surprisingly improved. Living art can include a single Orchid in a well chosen vase, a tasteful Bromeliad in an elegant bed of moss and wood or a peace Lilly in a wicker enclosure. It all depends on the style one is going for, but living art can often be grown or obtained at a greenhouse sale for less than the price of some artwork.

How the living art presents itself to the room is also affected by how it is illuminated. A strategic positioning of a lamp or light can create the appearance the plant is more vibrant and alive giving a feeling of gentle brilliance for free.

Utilizing fabrics, clearance sales and garage sales

A little skill with fabric and a keen eye for items at clearance and garage sales may be just what the living room needs to finish it up. Whether it be a chair, an end table, or a statue, chances are there is just the right piece waiting somewhere in the seal of unwanted art, items and objects that can make for a pleasant distraction to the eyes or interesting conversation piece.

Living rooms are a fairly important room of the home as it is often the room that is passed through to get to many other rooms of the home. For this reason making the living room a comfortable, happy, and relaxing place to dwell in and walk through. The living room may also be a place for contemplation and inspiration provided by certain eye catching and thoughtful decorations. Achieving these ends in a living room on a budget can be done with a little time, thought and reflection on assimilating the tips provided in this article into a design plan.
