Where all the gold in the world is

China is currently the largest producer of gold, followed by the United States. However, India and China are the largest consumers of gold. Approximately 28,398 metric tons of gold were held by central banks, this money is allowed to be used for "monetary investment purposes" per the Number Sleuth infographic below. Moreover, of the 8,000 tons of U.S. gold, 75 percent of it is said to be reserved for "foreign exchange purposes."
